Libertyville is a community of some 20 thousand people just 40 miles from downtown Chicago. It is served by the Metra Rail system and linked by several major highways to the city. The population density of around two thousand people per square mile makes it among the least crowded communities of its size in the country. The village is populated by small stabile families. Incomes tend to be above the national average, the median being over one hundred thousand dollars a year.
Current house prices in the Libertyville area can be very reasonable. Older three bedroom homes in great suburban locations can be found for under three-hundred thousand dollars. Newer homes are closer to seven-hundred thousand dollars. However, land values are relatively high compared to other communities, with small plots priced beyond twenty-thousand dollars an acre. Houses are sold on very small tracts, usually considerably smaller than one-quarter acre.
Libertyville has a definite village feel. Its downtown around Milwaukee Avenue and Church Street is lined with small shops, trees, dotted with public lawns and parks. It is also an area of long, straight boulevards and highways.
There are several forest preserves and larger areas of parkland around the town. Butler Lake Park is a lovely spot. The Des Plaines River flows near the town. The park surrounding the river includes the Des Plaines River Trail. Libertyville is the home to the campus of the University of St. Mary of the Lake.
